INITIATIVE SEEKS TO EDUCATE ABOUT FRANCHISING

Jobseekers learning about franchising

The British Franchise Association has joined forces with the Department of Work and Pensions to help educate people about franchising.

Guidance designed for advisers throughout the Jobcentre Plus network means that people approaching Jobcentres for advice can now learn about becoming their own boss through franchising.

The sector has grown by more than 20 per over the past five years, a net increase of more than 6,000 new businesses, and Brian Smart, director general of the association, said: “Franchising, time and again, proves itself to be a powerful way of helping people build successful new lives, but it is vital that they are armed with the right information to avoid any potential pitfalls from the start.

“The Jobcentre Plus network has remained an important part of that process and we hope this additional resource with help continue the trend of decreasing unemployment.”

A department spokesperson said: “We are committed to helping people off benefits and into work, and self-employment can be a great fit for some claimants.“
