The CBI in the North East of England has today welcomed the latest official labour market data, showing that the national unemployment rate dropped by 0.1% to 7.8%, with the total number of unemployed falling to 2.5m.

ONS figures confirmed that unemployment fell in the North East in the period between October and December 2012, while in the past year the number of people out of work in the region has fallen by 1.5% - the largest fall of any region in the UK outside of London.

Andrew Hebden, CBI Assistant Director for the North East, said: “It is encouraging that, despite tough economic conditions, the unemployment numbers continue to fall.

“The news about the North East is particularly positive and shows that our economy is turning a corner. While unemployment in the region is still higher than we would like, these figures show it continues to close the gap on other parts of the UK.

“The North East is home to some exceptional businesses that are leading the way in terms of proving how you can deliver real growth and provide high quality jobs, even at a time when there is still a great deal of uncertainty in much of the economy.”
